History
Lemons have been cultivated and traded for centuries, becoming important culinary and fragrance materials across Europe and the Mediterranean. The fruit's vitamin C content helped make fresh lemon juice valuable on long sea voyages; this nutritional history should not be attributed to the essential oil, which is produced from the rind and has a different composition.
