Background Story
Named after Mr Simmonds, the botanical name Simmondsia sinensis refers to the jojoba plant, a perennial leathery-leaved shrub native to arid regions of Mexico and the southern United States. Despite being commonly referred to as an oil, jojoba is technically a golden liquid wax composed of esters formed from long-chain fatty acids and alcohols.
Jojoba is highly valued because it does not oxidise easily, remains chemically stable for years, and resists becoming rancid. It has excellent thermal stability and even remains unchanged after exposure to high temperatures. If refrigerated it may solidify, but quickly returns to liquid form at room temperature.
The seeds resemble coffee beans and are cold pressed to produce a golden wax with a yield of approximately 50–60%. Due to its similarity to human sebum and collagen-like properties, jojoba has become one of the world's most popular carrier oils for skincare, massage, and cosmetic applications.
