History

Rose has been treasured throughout history as the Queen of flowers and the Queen of essential oils. The word Rosa comes from the Greek word rodon, meaning red, reflecting the deep crimson colour of ancient roses.

Rose fossils have been found dating back hundreds of thousands of years, and there are now more than 10,000 cultivated varieties. Rose water was first prepared by Avicenna in the 10th century, while the essential oil itself was first extracted during the 16th century.

Highly prized in Babylon, Assyria, China, Egypt, Rome, and Greece, Rose has long symbolised beauty, love, youth, perfection, and immortality. No other flower has been used for so many sacred and ceremonial purposes throughout history.
