History

Myrtle was regarded as a sacred plant by the ancient Persians and symbolised love and peace among both Jewish and Greek cultures. Victors at the Olympic Games were often crowned with Myrtle wreaths, and the plant was commonly dried and used in bouquets and ceremonial headdresses.

Its antiseptic properties have been recognised since ancient Greek times. During the 16th century, Myrtle was a key ingredient in a popular skin preparation known as 'Angel's Water'. Throughout history it has also been used for lung and bladder complaints, and in North Africa it became a traditional remedy for coughs and chest infections.
