The name Hyssop comes from the Greek word hyssopus, derived from the Hebrew word 'ezoph', meaning 'good scented herb'. Throughout the Middle Ages, Hyssop was highly regarded for its therapeutic properties, particularly for respiratory complaints, wound healing, and reducing swelling.

Hyssop contains a relatively high ketone content, making it one of the stronger essential oils traditionally used in aromatherapy and requiring careful application. Historically it has been associated with purification and cleansing practices due to its powerful aromatic qualities.
