History
The word Geranium is derived from 'geranios', the Greek word for the plant commonly known as crane's bill. Pelargonium comes from the Greek word for stork, while graveolens means strongly scented.
Historically, Geranium was used by the Romans for diarrhoea and dysentery because of its antispasmodic action on smooth muscle. Rose Geranium is also regarded as an adrenal cortex stimulant. The hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex help regulate the balance of hormones produced throughout the body, including male and female sex hormones.
Traditionally it has been valued during adolescence, menopause, menstrual imbalance, and fertility support. Rose Geranium also has a stimulating effect on the lymphatic system and is regarded as supportive for the liver and kidneys. In skincare it is especially valued for helping balance sebum production.
