History
Fennel takes its name from the Latin word for 'hay', reflecting its historic use as animal fodder. Well known to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, it was traditionally associated with longevity, strength, and courage.
Greek athletes reportedly used fennel as a slimming aid and to help manage body weight, while Roman soldiers chewed the seeds during long marches to help satisfy hunger. During the Middle Ages, fennel was often combined with St. John's Wort and carried as a symbol of protection against evil influences and misfortune.
