History
Pimenta racemosa, commonly called the Bay Rum Tree or West Indian Bay Tree, is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree native to low-altitude forest slopes of northern South America and the Caribbean. It is cultivated throughout the tropics and has become naturalised in some Pacific islands. The leaves have long been used in cooking, while the essential oil is distilled to produce the famous Bay Rum cologne. Although Bay Rum products often contain rum, the concentrated essential oil itself is highly potent and unsuitable for consumption.
