History
Bay Laurel has a long cultural history in the Mediterranean world. Laurel wreaths became symbols of honour, achievement, poetry and learning in ancient Greek and Roman traditions, and the plant remains associated with distinction and accomplishment. Ancient Olympic victors, by contrast, traditionally received wreaths made from wild olive.
