About: Also known as pot marigold or marybud. Calendula is the diminutive form of the Latin calendae (the first day of the month) and the plant is so called because of its habit of flowering all the year round in the wild. Officinalis is applied to all plants which have been used as medicinal herbs. The common English name for this widespread pretty plant is made up of Mary (the Virgin Mary) and gold, referring to the glorious golden colour of the flower.
Therapeutic benefits – external use:
· It has anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, anti-haemorrhage, emmenagogue, mild-diaphoretic, astringent, choleretic (increasing bile production) and vulnerary (helps healing of wounds) properties.
· Good for bed sores, broken veins and varicose veins, bruises, gum infections and inflammation, tooth extraction cavities, persistent ulcers, cuts or scratches, piles, burns, enlarged lymph nodes, sebaceous cysts, skin lesions.
· It is very effective on rashes, chapped and cracked skin, and dry eczema.
· Good for slow healing wounds.
· Calendula extract is indicated for enlarged or inflamed lymph nodes, sebaceous cysts and acute or chronic skin lesions.
How to Use: This oil can be applied directly onto the skin and can be massaged onto the neck and shoulders, arms, legs, feet, tummy and back for example. It is safe to use on the face.
