Aromaflex was born in a season of life defined by motherhood, care, and intuition.
The name came to me while breastfeeding our second child, and the font was chosen during my pregnancy with our third—a time where nurturing, simplicity, and connection shaped everything I created.
Growing up as the eldest of four in Paeroa, I learned early that family sits at the centre of wellbeing. That belief became the foundation of Aromaflex—a business created not just to support our family, but to care for others in a natural, meaningful way.
My grandmother once told me, “Shells, if you labour with love, you will never work another day in your life.”
Those words have guided every blend, every product, and every step of this journey.
What began with small children at my side has grown into something that now supports the next generation—rooted in care, guided by experience, and shared with purpose.
About Us
Aromaflex began in 1995, but the seed was planted much earlier—through scent, memory, and a deep sense of care.
While studying aromatherapy and reflexology in London, a single moment changed everything. The aroma of lavender essential oil brought back vivid memories of my great-grandmother. In that instant, I understood the power of scent—not just as fragrance, but as connection, healing, and memory.
That moment became the beginning of a lifelong path.
After the birth of our first two children, Aromaflex was created and we moved to Nelson to open our doors on Trafalgar Street. At the time, aromatherapy was practised almost exclusively through treatments and massage. What didn’t exist was a place where people could walk in, explore, and receive personalised blends made just for them.
So we created it.
Inspired by the apothecary-style experience of Neal's Yard Remedies, we took things further—offering bespoke formulations, selling oils in smaller quantities, and working directly with people over the counter. I began measuring oils drop by drop, creating accessible options for customers when only standard bottle sizes were available.
What started as a simple idea became something entirely new in New Zealand.
Every blend was handcrafted, every label handwritten, and every formulation created with care and intention. Refilling bottles—now a growing movement—was something we introduced early on, driven by both practicality and a commitment to sustainability.
Over time, Aromaflex evolved into its own label. By sourcing directly from growers, both locally and internationally, we were able to offer high-quality, certified organic essential oils at accessible prices—without compromising integrity.
In 2000, after losing my mother to breast cancer, our direction deepened. The following year, Aromaflex became one of New Zealand’s first aromatherapy companies to achieve organic certification. This wasn’t just a business decision—it was personal.
Today, Aromaflex remains grounded in the same principles it was built on:
care, connection, and the belief that plant-based formulations, when used correctly, truly support wellbeing.
We continue to handcraft blends, refill bottles, and create personalised remedies for our community—just as we did in the beginning.
